Jumping like a Wild Banshee

Post by Olivers mama »

Ziva is a young GSD - 15-18 mos, based upon the fact she's still growing. Weighs 81 lbs (so far). Adopted from a GSD Rescue about 3 months ago. We're having difficulties on a couple of issues - I'll use separate threads so EYE don't get confused!

She will NOT stop jumping. On people, at doors...doesn't matter. We boarded her with our vet last month when we went out of town for 3 days. When we got back, we were told she can't board there any more because she keeps jumping in the kennel. Looks like a darn kangaroo.

Doesn't matter the type of collar: first trainer used a standard choke collar. We switched to Gentle Leader. 2nd trainer used the prong collar. We switched to the Halti. Doesn't matter - she rears up like a horse. Turn around & ignore her - doesn't matter - she'll just jump on you the next opportunity. I'm 5'5" - when she jumps up, she's as tall as me.

We've told her "No" - "Off" - "Leave it" - "Sit" - "Stay" - "Wait". We've tried them all. Doesn't matter. This morning, hubby walked her to the truck - she jumped up on the door & scratched it. She's lucky hubby is good at controlling his temper.

Please help!

Thanks,
Becky

Give us a rundown of her typical day,& what training & how often?

What commands has she mastered? You must have her sit/stay in all situations.Inside /outside everywhere. She must sit before front door opens, car door opens, etc. You can have her auto sit on walks--everytime you stop thats her cue to sit. She should learn it fairly quickly.
You must do guest training too. There are many choices. Lots of repitition for each
1) send her to 'place' when a guest comes over. She may get up to greet guests after they sit for just a few sec then she goes into another room.
2) put her leash on when a guest comes over. Have her sit/wait. (it will help to step on the leash so she can't jump up) praise remain calm as long as 4 paws are on the ground. Guest sits down then she may greet as above. Any jumping guest goes back out the door.
3) keep her in another room with door closed or baby gate.

It is a hard habit to break, but with patience & consistancy it can be done

others will be along with more suggestions.
