Breaking in to closet!

Post by telpinaro »

I have a new, adopted dog that is brilliant at getting into the closet where I keep the dog food! The closet has folding/sliding doors, and the food is in metal trash cans. Today (I am actually extremely impressed) I had left a dog crate with several gallons of water (for added weight so he couldn't push it away) in front of the doors, but he broke one of the doors and pulled it off the tracks from behind it! He also took the lid off of one of the trash cans (still standing!) and pulled a bag of food out of it. Ate some, but thankfully not all, or he'd have one upset tummy!

I can leave them outside when I'm gone, but sometimes it's too cold or otherwise bad weather. The only other option is lock the dogs in a smaller room, which I'd rather not do if I have to be gone for a longer period of time. Plus, then they wouldn't be able to get to the dog door I haven't gotten yet, but it's in the mail and on the way.

Any ideas for keeping them out of the closet? I could care less about the closet doors... I just don't want them over eating. I've looked up dog gates, but the only tall ones have universally bad reviews.

that was exactly what i'd have suggested. i've had one of these storage bins for a good 15 years or so and it's in the same perfect condition as the day i brought it home new.

That would probably work... I guess I'll just have to leave the closet open. I don't particularly want to come home to doors on the floor when I have to leave!

Does it come in any larger sizes? I buy two 30 lb bags of dog food at a time so I can alternate food easily.

the one that i have would easily fit 50lbs. back when i fed kibble i would empty the bag into the container. but if you've got two different foods i could consider getting two and then stacking them. they are quite sturdy.

i'm actually going to get a smaller one now that i've gone to a dehydrated raw food ........i know they come in a number of sizes. the one i got is the exact same design but it wasn't originally designed for dog food.......you might find the prices better if it's sold as general storage rather than specifically marketed for pet owners.
