Useful Links

I thought I'd gather up all the most commonly recommended threads and list them here for everyone's convenience. Hope it helps someone. :3 Also I hope Noobs, Jacksdad and Ladybug don't mind me linking to their stories. I've done this because I've often seen them mentioned as reference material for people in similar situations. I hope I've picked out the right ones to show.

Recommended Reading (with thanks to Jacksdad!)

Here are some books to get the recommended reading list started and should appeal to a broad audience. I give the books author's web site over a retail seller when possible. but places like amazon or dogwise are good places to get dog books as sometimes a lower price.
General dog knowledge

Patricia McConnell
Other end of the leash http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/produc ... h-your-dog
"Not so much a training book as in a how to teach sit, stay, down, but a great book to start for understanding dogs."

Tales of Two Species http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/produc ... s-dog-book
"Collection of essays that cover in brief a wide range of topics of general knowledge."

Jean Donaldson
Oh Behave!: Dogs from Pavlov to Premack to Pinker http://www.amazon.com/Oh-Behave-Pavlov- ... 615&sr=1-7
"Another Collection of essays that cover in brief a wide range of topics of general knowledge."

Karen Pryor
Don't Shoot the dog http://store.clickertraining.com/dontshootdog.html
"Clicker training and understanding learning process and methods. somewhat academic in tone, but not dry reading in my opinion."

Suzanne Clothier
Bones Would Rain From the Sky http://flyingdogpress.com/Merchant2/mer ... ry_Code=BB
A personal viewpoint on how we should work with dogs.

Turid Rugaas
On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals
"Great for learning a bit of dog language with some nice stories."
Basic Dog Training

Ian Dunbar
Before & after getting your puppy (also sort of available in the internet http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/di ... g-textbook)
"Great for socialization and bite inhibition and it sort of challenges to really think about what you are getting/have gotten yourself into with a puppy."

Patricia McConnell
Family Friendly Dog Training http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/produc ... ining-book
"A do it your self basic 6 week program or can be used to complement a class given by a 'pro'"

Jean Donaldson
Train Your Dog Like a Pro http://www.amazon.com/Train-Your-Dog-Li ... 615&sr=1-1
"Comes with a companion DVD and teaches you how to train your dog."

Victoria Stillwell
It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet http://positively.com/store/books/it-s- ... t-pet.html
"Been a while since I read this one, but memory is that it actually covers both general knowledge and how to train."

Pat Miller
The Power of Positive Dog Training
"Explains the basics of positive reinforcement and clicker training and gives a nice 6 week plan with good instructions to teach your dog great tricks while building a good relationship."
Reactive Dogs (aka fearful dogs and fear aggressive dogs)

Patricia McConnell
FEISTY FIDO! Help for the Leash Reactive Dog http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/produc ... eisty-fido
a quick and easy read. covers briefly what is going on and then dives in with what you can do.

Treating Dog/Dog Reactivity This is a DVD and is from a recent half day seminar Patricia gave. It represents some of her latest thinking. defiantly more expensive than the books, but worth every penny if you can or willing to spend for it.
http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/produc ... tivity-dvd

Ali Brown
Scaredy Dog! Understanding & Rehabilitating Your Reactive Dog http://www.scaredydog.info/
goes into more depth what is going on and what you can do without being dry and academic.
Separation Anxiety

Patrica McConnell
l'll Be Home Soon http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/produc ... on-anxiety
been a while since I have read this one, but the preventive suggestions where very helpful with Jacks very, very mild SA.

Nicole Wilde
Don't Leave Me! Step-by-Step Help for Your Dog's Separation Anxiety http://www.phantompub.com/DontLeaveMe.htm
I don't really like suggesting books I haven't read when it comes to some subjects. helping out dogs with issues such as SA and reactivity being one of those cases. However, Nicole is a expert blogger for Victoria and Patrica sells this book of her site and has had good things to say about in her blog, so I am taking a chance and listing it anyway.
Thoughts on authors styles.
Patrica and Ali tend to write a bit more for the broad audience that does not include professional trainers. their style is light and more conversational, easy to follow and keeps your attention without "dumbing" down the info.

Jean tends to be a little more dry and academic but NOT painfully so. she does seem to write more for the professional dog trainer or dog "geek" audience. Her How to train like a pro seems to be an exception.

none of these books I think would be over anyone's head and cause anyone to be lost in a world of 50 cent words and make the info people need about as simple as you can get without going to a "see dick run, see jane walk" level.

Then for those who want something that dives deeper, Jean Donaldson runs an Distance learning formatted Dog Training school and has posted her recommend reading list. I can't comment on most of these books as I haven't read any of them but here they are none the less

You're welcome guys! It was barely any trouble at all :) The only ones that took some time were linking to people's personal threads - I wanted to try and find the most informative ones :)

I may add a 'Recommended Reading' section too, soon. I remember Scaredy Dog is often mentioned, I'll have to trawl the threads to see which other books are useful. :)

yes, nice work.

I don't recall my first post(s) were actually anything to do with reactive dog, I believe they were about Jack getting into the garbage.

A recommended reading list would be good and I will sticky that also, possibly as an announcement (then it will appear as a sticky in all forums) - might do that to this one actually..

We will still have to link people or refer them, for some reason the human brain just blanks sticky/announcement threads, but its super useful to have for us!

here are some books to get people started. Books can get geeky and dry the more scientific or academic the become so my two cents keep that in mind when recommending a book. These books do have an audience here, but I would suggest giving a heads up that a book might fall into this category as not everyone enjoys this style.

Wonderful! I'll add this to the opening post, thanks so much, Jacksdad!

edit: and if anyone else has any links or books to add to it let me know. Also if Emmabeth would rather it was chopped into 2 separate threads, that's fine too!

What a great Idea! Thanks for taking the time to put this info together Minkee, and Jacksdad for the book info and training video's. I was going to post asking about any video's and books on training, this was really great to find!

Thanks!! :D

I was checking out kikopup's website from her youtube account, and she has a great page on there, that lists all the video's she has on YouTube, in an easy to read organized list. :) So I thought I would share it here, because I find it hard to find things I'm looking for on YouTube, so it might be the same for others. I was super excited when I saw this page. Hope it helps. :) http://www.dogmantics.com/Dogmantics/Fr ... _List.html

I have some suggestions on books to read. These are one's that I read before I got my puppy.

Basic Dog Training
Ian Dunbar
Before & after getting your puppy (also sort of available in the internet http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/di ... g-textbook)
Great for socialization and bite inhibition and it sort of challenges to really think about what you are getting/have gotten yourself into with a puppy.

Also for a youtube channel
http://www.youtube.com/user/DogStarDaily

Pat Miller
The Power of Positive Dog Training
Explains the basics of positive reinforcement and clicker training and gives a nice 6 week plan with good instructions to teach your dog great tricks while building a good relationship.

General Dog Knowledge
Turid Rugaas
On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals
Great for learning a bit of dog language with some nice stories.

All are available on Amazon.
Of course I also have Victoria's book. :)
The best friend of Ansa the sprollie since autumn 2010.
