I am a massive fan of Ox Heart (well Ted is and I am of feeding it to him) so I thought I'd write a bit about what I do with it here. I'm talking about Ox Heart but I guess you could do this with any heart
First up, this is what a whole one looks like, they're massive
It tends to be reasonably priced (about £2.50/Kg in the UK) as we don't eat much of this stuff any more, our butcher gets them in for us when we ask him. It's both organ meat and muscle meat so it's very versatile. If you feed chicken carcasses and want to add some meat to the more boney ones this is a great meat to do it with.
The first thing I do is trim off a lot of the fat as it would upset Ted's stomach. So depending on whether you're watching your dogs weight or if it doesn't do well on fat get rid of it.
As Ted is fed raw I then butcher up a fair portion of it into Ted sized meals and freeze them, Ted eats them either defrosted, or more typically in order to slow him down (as he loves the stuff ) partially defrosted.
I then make chews and treats with the rest. If you have a dehydrator you can use that but if not kitchen paper on a wire rack in a reasonably warm airy space works well. I find I need to change the paper frequently in the first day or two to stop it sticking then it tends to be ok. It seems to take around 4 to 5 days to completely dry out and then I freeze some and pop some in the fridge for the treat bag/as chews.
For the treats I cut about an inch square and they seem to dry down to about a cm square These still need cutting into training treats as Ted is so tiny and they are chewy so they're not brilliant for getting through lots of training fast but can be great for recall when you want the dog to pause on return to you For the chews I cut long strips about 1/2 to 1 inch square and these dry down to about 1 cm square strips too. The chews are surprisingly tough and Ted loves them
I've got some on paper now that should be ready tomorrow/the day after and once they are I'll add a photo in this post
*Drumroll*, ta daaaa, here they are:
It took about 4 days to get them to this state ready to use/freeze

Hmmm...like the chew idea Clare, ours have ox heart, but usually just in chunks/as a big hunk of meat for part of their meal. Do you just leave it out on the side for a few days? How bad does it smell? I'd love to try the liver treats, but the smell of liver makes me gag, even just cutting it up for the dogs (and they have it frozen so once it's cut up I don't have to smell it again), but the heart I've had doesn't smell too bad.
As an aside - I'm climbing Kilimanjaro in September and still need to raise a load more money. I'm having a few stalls (car boot/coffee morning type things) and was thinking of making dog treats/toys to sell as well as some other (human) stuff - jewellry, cakes etc, to raise money. I'll use some of the ideas already here, but if anyone has any more ideas of easy treats to make in bulk cheaply, but that will appeal to the general public and I can bag up and sell for a £1-2 a bag, then please let me know!

Yeah Ted's raw stuff I feed in a "big" chunk of meat.
Just leave it somewhere sunny/warm, it doesn't smell at all to me (although I bet Ted can smell it), it does take a good few days to dry out (this lot started Saturday and I reckon will be done Tuesday/Wednesday) but you'll know when its done as it will be pretty solid. Just keep checking it that first day or it will stick to the paper (grease proof paper might be better but I've never tried).
I've just done a batch of liver treats too, wish I'd asked you now if you wanted some made, I'll PM you next time

Just added the finished Ox Heart treats into the original post (just to keep it all together) for anyone who wants to see how they end up (they really shrink down)

They keep ages in the freezer and a few weeks in the fridge, in a treat bag probably about a week but like you'd ever find that out

Re: RECIPES: For Kongs, Meals, Treats, Snacks, and Food Toppings
I feed my little girl raw now and I can't always be around to wait for her to finish her food, clean her up and mop the floor. At times like that, I like to have "fast food" ready for her - 2 meatballs and spoonful of yogurt (size of meatball is half of dog's usual meal portion, since it's home made, you can adjust the size accordingly!)
Meatball recipe
1. Mix 2 eggs, 500g of minced meat (or 250g of minced meat and 250g of dehydrated raw food), 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 shredded carrot.
2. Divide the mixture and form each portion into a meatball. (My girl will eat about 60g of food in one meal, so I usually divide the mixture into 27 meatballs, 2 balls form a complete meal).
3. Bake at 180 C for 30 min.
Voila!

Hi There,
I am just about to try making some homemade wet dog food for the first time. Could anyone please provide me with a standard percentages list of what nutritional values should be included in this. IE. 40% protein, 50% Carbs, 10% Fibre etc.? In this way I can use the formula to make different combinations of ingredients. Thank you so much for the help. Kris

Hello folks!
I've been enjoying all these Kong ideas - currently I stuff with kibble and 'plug' the top with some no added salt organic peanut butter (and a wee chunk of apple if it's handy )
I notice there have been a lot of suggestions for canned pumpkin but unfortunately, here in Manchester, such a thing is nigh on impossible to find! I wonder if I would be ok with cooked squash (e.g. butternut squash) instead? If not, I will give sweet potato a go

Just a quick question. Are kongs safe to freeze? I think I vaguely remember from the distant science classes most of which I slept through, that rubber can't be frozen..But I've seen many people do it so I guess it's safe?

Yes, you can freeze them. I have often done so with no problem.yummybagel wrote:Just a quick question. Are kongs safe to freeze? I have this recipe saved on my phone but no idea where it came from! Google isn't helping either. ): We made them yesterday at Ami's house and they apparently turned out well. I left before they'd finished cooking.
The people have eaten more than the dogs but the dogs enjoy them too!
I used blueberry yogurt instead of plain.

Carrot Dog Treats
2 cup carrots, grated
1/2 cup applesauce
1/2 cup plain yogurt
2 cups oat flour
1/2 cup ground flaxseed meal
1 tsp. baking powder
Puree carrots in blender or food processor, add appleauce and yogurt, and puree until mixutre is smooth
Pour pureed mixture in large bowl. Add flour, flaxseed, baking powder. Knead the dough until it is mixed well and forms a ball. If the dough is too sticky add a little more flour.
Turn Out the dough ball onto a floured surface and roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. This dough is fairly soft, so don’t roll too thin. Use cookie cutters to make fun shapes or just cut into squares. Place on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or nonstick foil. ( I use parchment paper for everything).
Bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the tops are browned. Flip treats over, and bake another 10 minutes. Cool Thoroughly.
Make 2 1/2 dozen treats. store in airtight container.

Meal delivery services are chef prepared meals that are a worthwhile alternative to fast food. The main concept of meal delivery services is an easy meal planning, and high quality meals that are healthier and more balanced.
