neospora

Post by ct2 »

Hi all,
Just thought I mention some info I have come across lately that relates to diet, in particular the Barf diet.

I am not against the Barf diet and mostly feed that diet to my dogs

However for those of you that feed your dogs raw lamb or beef there is a possiblity of it being infected with Neospora caninum. This is a parasite that seems to only affect dogs 1year and under or that have a compromised immune system. It can be in the system of adult dogs and when a female is bred it can affect the puppies with a range of debilitating
symptoms.

Not all doom and gloom though, it can be killed by freezing the meat for 24hrs or by cooking it. :D

Obviously I am no expert but I thought it was interesting and that I'd pass it on.

I think the majority of raw feeders have been made aware of this, although people new to it may not.

It is VERY rare, and it is preventable by freezing.

Always worth being reminded of it though.
