Diet post anal pro lapse

Post by Ocelot0411 »

Hi all

For those that remember me, its been a while I know but times were a bit tough after losing Ellie.

However, devastated though I still am, I have decided that life without a dog is just unbearable, so as of 11 April 2017 I will become 'mum' to a six month old rescued American Bulldog called Bella :D She has not has a very good start and was left abandoned and half starved at the side of a road with an anal prolapse that required surgery. Anyway she has had surgery at the rescue centre and is on the mend but she is on a 'special diet' for it which I think is a sensitive form of dry food.

I always fed raw with Ellie and I think its the best (obviously any small bones would be off the menu for quite some time) but they said to me to ask my vet what is best diet-wise. Well as many of us would argue, with the greatest of respect, vets aren't always the best 'go to' on nutrition. So can anyone help or does anyone know a canine nutritionist? I would really like specialist qualified advice on this if possible.

Thanks!

I have no advice to give, but just wanted to say hi, welcome back, and I'm so glad you'll soon have another dog in your life to bring you joy and help your heart mend :D

Hi and welcome back from me too.

The only 'canine nutritionists' I know of work for dog food companies  so I can't recommend anyone, and suggest if you find some names that you ensure that they are independent.

What exactly is the issue for your dog's future nutrition, once she is all healed up?

My own experience of American Bulldogs is that they are very very prone to skin allergies. It would be worth your while to find out if this is the case for yours, and also what else might be so wrong that she needs a special diet. There may be gut problems further up, and if there are, you need to know.

Hellooooooo!

Wot Nettle said really, I would have thought once a sensible healing period was up then diet could be relatively normal, unless there are further problems. I know people who have had various bits of bowel resectioned and removed and re-routed and they don't have any particularly unusual dietary requirements.

Hola Ems and Nettle!

Long time no speak!!

Thanks for this. In answer to your questions they have told me that this is her only issue and the only reason why she is on a special diet.  I have no idea what caused the prolapse in the first instance (nor do they) but I am sure if there was anything else they would tell me. Maybe it was neglect? No idea.

The doberprincess was on a raw diet due to the fact that doberman's have skin issue too. I didn't particularly know that american bulldog did too, but she is almost pure white so I had kind of assumed that this would be the case.  Also how do you stop them getting sunburnt?

All in all then I think I will opt for raw again as it stood Ellie in good stead, her coat was always beautiful and her teeth so clean!

So I guess I let her settle in first then change it slowly over to raw?

And thanks JudyN I hope she can mend me too.

Ocelot.

PS you do not want to know how much it costs to insure an ABD for vets fees!!!!  I need a pay rise!

It's normally recommended that unlike when switching to different brands of kibble, you switch to raw all at once. The reasoning is that they digest at different speeds and the kibble will slow down the transit of the raw, allowing more time for bacteria to develop. On the other hand, some people combine raw and kibble and I've never heard of anyone having a problem... It might be worth seeing if you can find anything reliable on the internet about this.

There is a lot of debate on this, so someone fed their dog a meal of kibble and a meal of raw and tracked them with X-rays. The findings were that kibble digested faster than raw. link

We've mixed kibble and raw for both Delta and Opal and have yet to have problems. I personally would switch gradually.
