Try this site. It seems to be a little more neutral and so far I’ve only seen one vague allusion to “leadership”. The other site is FULL of pack leader hooey and I stopped going there a long time ago even though the “normal” information was somewhat helpful.

http://www.justdogbreeds.com/all-dog-breeds.html

No one has mentioned the Bulldog yet. That’s a pretty lazy breed and although its hair is shorter than many other dogs, it is messier (droooooool….) and apparently less trainable than other breeds. It is said that they are "stubborn" but I'm not sure how the folks here would categorize that. "Mind of its own" or whatever. The French Bulldog is another one that isn’t very active. Both breeds have short noses which results in respiratory problems and snoring.

I agree with everything Emmabeth has said. Consider a breed that’s not necessarily small. Medium breeds like Whippets are lovely, and although it loves to run, it’s also quite a couch potato of a breed. Also consider the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or a Japanese Chin which are not active breeds. I believe none of the breeds above are big barkers.

Good luck and do keep us updated on what you decide to do!

do you know what i have always had big dogs, until my cav's
my last dogs were great danes now dont start panicking at the size of these animals, but they are perfect for what you are describing you want
i brought my danes when my youngest was 3yrs old and my eldest was 9yrs old i have 4 kids

they dont need grooming much, they dont eat alot or need alot of exercise (couple walks a day) as some people might think they do, for the size of the dog they have small stomachs and small hearts, they have great temperments and are very loyal animals, only down side to a dane is generally dont live for long althrought mine were 9 and 9 and half when they died,

training was easy compared to a small dog,but you do need to train them correctly like any dog

i would research all the breeds mentioned and see what one suits you best when i get an animal regardless of what it is i always buy a few books on the breed first so i can be sure of what i am taking on.

a great dane is happiest when lying down with his family relaxing and unlike some smaller breeds that can be funny with young kids this breed is perfect with the right training my kids used to snuggle up to them lie on them and not once did we have a problem...

and they really dont need alot of room

i would defiantly recommend great danes to anyone

Hi there, runlikethewind. :D I have missed the folks here so I drop by on occasion to read up on you guys. Sometimes I reply, most times I don't. There are more than enough people who are knowledgeable and able to help. But once in a while I can't help but give my two cents' worth. :D

I do hope OP comes back to let everyone know what they got.

Hi everyone!
I would like to say thanks to everyone who commented and helped me :D And let everyone know the search is over! I now own a beautiful Bichon frise x toy poodle puppy  , Her name is Kimi she is 8 weeks old and she is almost completly black apart fom a small white dot on her chest and a small white bit on her back toe. I managed to find a friend from my kids school who owned a bichon frise (female) and a toy poodle (male) she told me that her pets had had puppies by accident, and I asked if i could come over to spend a bit of time with the bichon and poodle so i could see what they were like and to get as much info from her on what it is like owning them, and i must say after that experience it just made me even more positive i wanted this cross breed. I am also told that this cross is called a poochon or a bichon noir and are quite hard to get hold of, so i am very lucky i think! :D I love my little girl so much already after only a week, she is so well behaved, and she has only had a couple of accidents, she uses puppy pads at the moment as she can not go outside yet, we are really looking forward to many fun, love filled years with her. Also i wanted to add a picture of Kimi but it said "could not upload attachment" so not sure what to do there :? anyway thanks again :D

Try uploading your pic to photobucket (or similar site) and linking from there.
Would love to see a pic,

Congratulations on your new addition and don't forget you can ask here if you have any training questions!

Puppy pads aren't a very good idea - dogs tend to think it's okay to pee in the house as long as it's on something soft (which includes carpets, towels and clothes on the floor, etc)...if you have a private yard or a place nearby where you know other dogs don't go to potty, you could take her there, or you could put sod in something like a cat litter box...Ian Dunbar's book, After You Get Your Puppy (free .pdf here) has more notes on this, I believe, and is overall a great reference!

Congratulations on your new puppy! :)

Photobucket, Imageshack, and Imgur are all great image hosting sites you can use. Hope we get to see pictures - she sounds like a real cutie. :D

Congrats on your new pup! I can't wait to see some pics. :D

I agree about ditching the puppy pads. Your pup can go outside to potty though. Lots of folks with young pups that haven't had their full set of shots avoid letting their pups meet other dogs or sniff around where many other dogs have been, but you can certainly let your pup out in your own yard - assuming you have one.

If you feel you must let your dog use something in the house to potty then get a substrate that is the same as outside, like a square of sod. It will be much easier to transition from this to outside later on. :D :D

Congratulations on the new addition to your family :D

Remember that these next few weeks are THE time to get her socialised. Even before she's finished her jabs you can get her out and about, carrying her in a bag if need be, and introducing her to all the sights and sounds she's going to have to deal with when her jabs are done :) I'm sure the book that Erica mentioned has some great advice about that, and we had a discussion on the pros and cons of socialisation vs risk here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12890

Have fun with her! And always remember we're here if and when you want any advice or just to update us :)

I took Piper out and about before all her puppy shots were complete, I just mostly held her in my arms and let her see, smell and hear the world and all the people, dogs, things in it. :D Sometimes I would put her down and let her walk around, sometimes not, it was just a judgement call I made with each individual situation. As Minkee says, the important thing is to socialize at this young age. :D :D

Hello again, thanks for the advice on the puppy pads, Kimi is having her last shot next saturday, i intend on taking her out into my yard at that time, i was advised as i have cats coming into my garden not to let her out yet. I have taken her out with me carrying her and we met a few new people, once she can walk on a lead she will be out every morning on the school run with me as i walk my kids to school every day. The only issue i have at the minute is when i place her in her crate when she can not come with me she gets very upset,if she has not long eaten by the time i get back (be it only 20mins) she has worked herself up o much she is a bit sick :( i'm not sure what i can do so she doesnt get so upset when i leave, I leave her favorite toys with her and i am also feeding her in the crate so maybe she will come to see her crate as a nice place... anyway i have worked out how to get some pics on of her so enjoy! :D

Very cute!! Lovely blue eyes! Awesome!
Don't rush with taking her on school run with you, she is way too young for any kind of real walking.

The rule of thumb is 5 minutes per month of her life, for puppies. So at 3 months 15 minutes, at 4 months 20 minutes.

You may find it useful to get some sort of bag to tote her around in to begin with - Clare Marsh who's on this board has a little chihuahua and I think that's what she used to do. As a suggestion, it may be a good idea to carry her there on the school run, while there's lots of scary children stomping around (and a time limit on getting there!) then let her walk back with you, when you can go at her pace and explore all the exciting and scary things at her own pace, without having lots of kids running around her. Meeting kids is a great idea too! I'm just thinking of ways to let her not get overwhelmed. Your job right now is to make sure every experience she has is a positive one right now, good luck with it :D

Oh and, she's adorable!

Thanks very much for the advice! its sounds much better than what i was thinking to do  , I will definately walk her back rather than on the way as it does make sence with kids all around and the time i have (sometimes leaving a bit late from home  )
as i am at home all day, we can have a good explore on the way home, I have been looking at bags for her and while she is little it would be a good idea to get one i think. We are all loving her so much even though we are having a few bed time and when she is left alone issues, i think i will post whats going on on another thread to get some more advice, and thanks we think she is adorable too. :D
