I just wanted to let y'all know I learned another trick from the show! It was the episode with a white German Shepherd who was exhibiting aggression only when Dad was home. Possible solution suggested Dad move out-- only in jest, of course, lol! So anyway, Victoria started teaching the dad how to work on training one on one with the dog. One command she demonstrated was "Stand." This is very useful for my household, since my dog knows sit and lie down, and often will do those without even being told-- she is so eager to please that she is trying to anticipate what we want-- but sometimes we want her to "stand up," but just didn't know how to convey to her what we want. So Victoria showed how, from having the dog in a sitting or lying down position, and with a treat in your hand, sweep your arm past yourself, as if welcoming a special guest into your home, while saying "stand." The dog will move forward into a standing position and meet up with your hand to take the treat. So today I tried it on my Annie, and she caught on so fast, it was brilliant! She even did it once without a treat, only rewarding with praise-- VERY COOL!
So just now, I was telling my son about it, and asked if he wanted to learn how to do it, and he looked at me and said, "Mom. She knows 'Up.'" Oh. Talk about taking the wind out of my sails!
3 of my dogs don't do sit, Merlin is a Greyhound, Joe a Whippet/JRT and also has problems with sit, and Gracie because both her crutial ligaments have gone so a good "Stand" is essential, they are not allowed to move when in a Stand.
My pekeapoo, Piko, and I are working on the Stand command right now, and I discovered I was going about it all wrong. I figured Victoria would have a brilliant method.
Thanks to Fundog for providing details on Victoria's technique! We're revamping our strategy!
