Lead free forest walk!

Post by xconfusedx »

I had my first lead free walk with Hamish!

I have found a quiet forest near where I live - we were the only one walking in the whole forest!

I have been working on target training and recall on a long line. Today it was so quiet I figured I'd take a chance. I had stinky liver treats in my pocket just in case!

He was really good and only went about 5 feet away at a time. Running back to me and then away again, coming back when called and leaving a rabbit when told. He even sat and waited for his lead to go back on to walk across the road.

It was lovely to see him run, he looked so happy.

I know its something people do everyday but I was so proud of him :)

Plenty can't, though, so you're right to feel proud of yourself and him :D And what a good boy for coming away from a rabbit!

I dare say when he realises that he really isn't attached to you any more he may grow in confidence and push boundaries a little, but keep reinforcing the recall and praise/treat when he lets you put the lead back on and I'm sure he'll be fine. Well done!

Well done indeed! I am proud of both of you. "Leaving rabbit when told" is beyond my wildest dreams.

It's so exciting being able to do that for the first time isn't it :D

Just make sure that you keep treating him for coming back to you or for checking in with you so it's always rewarding and you'll go from strength to strength :D
