neutering

Post by newjerseylab »

I am glad that Victoria got that guy to neuter his dog, I know so many people that do not neuter, I know of a trainer that uses Victoria techniques but she does not believe in neutering. So you know she is not encourage neutering when she trains dogs

Some of us are rather surprised at her advice actually. Neutering was not the solution; training was. Don't blame a dog's testicles for the way he is. Most trainers on here acknowledge that as well. All very surprising and at odds to new thinking coming out.

Actually, it has been proven many times over that an un-neutered male could have SERIOUS behavioural problems. Not only that, but neutering can also be better for the health and well being of the dog as well... Check out this article about it;

It's not true. Sorry.. do a search on the forum here under health and you will be pointed towards an article which balances health v risks and for entire males are statistically less likely to suffer from prostrate cancer (for example) there are other examples.

Look at the above.

You have to responsible if you own an entire male or entire female. If you are not responsible, then neutering is in the best interests for you (not really your dog) Neuteuring does not improve behavioural issues in general.

What is this for wickedhippy? It would be nice if you wrote something instead of just putting up the link.

Oh sorry, lol - I thought I did. It's Victoria's response to all of the neutering issues.

No, it is Victoria's response to what is being said about that program and the man with the dog.

No, read the third paragraph - she specifically says it's not about the man and the dog. And the title of the blog is pretty straight forward.

It is about that lad and his dog, the dog comes from a line that shows some fear reactivity, those dogs are better neutered so they can't pass their genes on.

Wickedhippy, can you tell me why when neutered has been standard for at least 20 years we have more dogs than every in rescues and pounds, also the amount of dogs that are showing fear reactive problems is also very high. There wasn't these problems before neutering became standard.

First of all, I think the reasons are exactly what Victoria states in the blog;

"The bottom line is that some people are worried that neutering will somehow change their dogs and make them less ‘manly.’ I seriously think that Eric and people like him don’t want to neuter their dogs because not only are they worried how this will look to other people, they themselves will think differently about their dogs if they are castrated. In their eyes a dog without testicles is no longer the status symbol of macho power that they want."

And it's not just about the episode, as she states here;

"This blog isn’t about how I helped Eric train Caspar, but is written to illustrate a real problem that people have (and I’m sorry to be sexist here, but statistically the problem is mostly with men) about neutering their pets. I have a hard time respecting people’s ignorance and denial when evidence is presented by so many studies on the medical and behavioral benefits of neutering. I am also well aware of the behavioral and medical complications that could arise from neutering too, but feel the pros far outweigh the cons. "

She says over and over that neutering is something she advises - obviously not just to Eric, but to all responsible dog owners. I'm just repeating her opinion, and I do agree with what she says.

This is true, some people are like this but there are many others who are not.

Without reading it again I can't comment, but often people read differently to each other.

From the problems I have had that were caused by neutering I would never neuter a male unless it was on a vet's recommendation, for a health problem not a behaviour problem. I have had several discussions with my vets about neutering, they agree with me with male dogs, I always get a b itch neutered because the health reasons are a lot more. With male dogs what you gain in health problems you loose with them as well, you are just changing the health problems. If people bothered to exercise, train and socialise their dogs, and vets didn't tell owners with pups to not take them out, there wouldn't be the problem dogs that there are now.

You're right - she said "some people" as well. Unfortunately, I think it's more than necessary - I guess even one that thinks that way is bad.

I'm sure that you're right about your dog too - though that might not be the case with a lot of other dogs.

I am not saying how people should think - just agreeing with Victoria's reasoning. We all have our own thoughts about this I guess.
