My Dogs and I are Bored! Help!

Post by Cheetah »

Ok, we are bored, and I want to teach my dogs some new behaviors. Any ideas on what I could teach? I suppose I could work on targeting some more... but I dunno... I feel like doing something new. Suggestions welcome!

can they walk backwards,

figure 8's through your legs,

play bow on command

piroutte on hind legs

spin right

spin left

side step

hop

crawl (limbo)

turn lights on/off

shut open drawers

pickup stray laundry and put it in a specific location.

find vehicle keys and retrieve them (you may need to attach a ball on the key chain for this one)

Why not do heelwork to music, there will be lots you can teach them then. :D

As much as I would love to do this with any of my trio I find that my feet just don't have rhythm.

That's just it, I would still be too embarassed to try and dance in front of my dog. Somehow I think he would think less of me  :).

The good news is that now that Khan's rehab is much more complete and I can spend less time worrying about him and his issues, I can now go back to spending more trianing time with Apollo....Back to elash walking 101 with him as he is such a bad puller. I have been letting him get away with his behavior because I have been spending more time and energy training Khan to be social and friendly. But its time now to get focus back on the basics with Apollo.

My goodness, this should keep us busy for a while!

Eevee can walk backwards, spin left and crawl, but Shippo still hasn't figured those out yet.

The rest, they can't yet do. Thanks! I'll start with figure 8's.

HTM is not dancing. Did you see the Tina Humphrey video? HTM is just what is says, heelwork to music. No fancy moves required, jut heeling.

Have you considered setting up an indoor agility course? That's what we do here in the winter when the snow is too deep for Boo (4lb toy poodle) and its well below freezing.
We actually have to set up 2 courses- Boo's in the living room and Gunther's (German Shepherd) in the basement.
You can make the obstacles out of inexpensive pvc pipe, funnoodles, a few boards, a hoolahoop and a kids tunnel. Creatively use anything you have around the house and then you can put it away when the pups are done playing/learning.

Unfortunately, I am stuck living with somebody else right now until I get back on my feet financially. These people have so much stuff and furniture, and the house is set up in such a way that there are no open spaces big enough to move, much less set up any agility stuff.

I actually have a jump and some weave poles packed away, waiting to have enough room to be brought out again. :(

Rally Obedience. You don't need a lot of room for it and it is fun.

Mattie, two left feet. I couldn't dance if I tried. But I can heel to music :D
