Re: New dog reactive, clingy, anxious when alone

Context is everything. If your dog was given a cue and did as expected he will learn to anticipate the click and realize it will originate from who he is working with. A random click away from working will not be problematic in my experience. The most important thing with clicks and markers is timin...

Re: New dog reactive, clingy, anxious when alone

What is really interesting to note is the difference in a marker word vs the click of a clicker. The marker message with a clicker actually reacts within a more primitive side of the brain as opposed to yes or yep or other vocalization. What this can mean is that in high stress situations behaviors ...

Re: New dog reactive, clingy, anxious when alone

If you can have him read "the other end of the leash". The most important thing about that book is the understanding there is a difference in how dogs communicate than how primates communicate. Its not a training manual per se, but rather a book about understanding and improving the relati...

Re: New dog reactive, clingy, anxious when alone

It looks like you certainly have your hands full with multiple issues. Based on what you have posted: Separation Anxiety Reactive to Strangers Reactive to Hubby when you are present Reactive to Movement of people in the house I would certainly recommend seeking a local professional veterinary behavi...

Re: Hello, new here

Welcome to the forum One thing to keep in mind easier does not translate to fixed overnight. One of the misnomers on any televised show is the show is only a half hour or 1 hour long program and people see a dog in the fist 10 minutes that is tearing up the house, behaving aggressively etc... and th...

Re: I'm at my wits end! (Leash Reactivity)

The 2 most important factors you have with this issue is time and distance. If your dog is being so reactive that he cannot be diverted, then you are too close to the stimuli. Also you could be exposing to to many stimuli at once. I understand and know its hard, but limit to as few triggers as you c...

Re: Barking dog

If he is barking/lunging to the point were he will not re-direct for a treat or other distraction, then you are far too close to that which is triggering the barking. Shorten your interactions with people you meet along your walks to a quick sniff and move on. Keep all encounters positive.

Re: Suddenly scared dog

Dogs are also sensitive to pressure changes, have then been storms in your area? I know sometimes one of my guys seems to hide for no reason which seems to be related to heat lightning and really distant thunder claps.

This is sweet

Unlike most days at the Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and grey, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All the recent arrivals were confused and concerned. They had no idea what to think for they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had spent some tim...

Rembering Chloe

One of the greatest things I did with Chloe was making each day count towards the end. Her favorite place was the beach so every friday became fiesta friday and we would go and play on the beach. DM is a horrendous condition which is similar to ALS. The nerve condition in the spine is slowly lost le...

Re: Ticks and treatment

Lymes is very common in my area as well as Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Some thing you can do to avoid leaving the head behind. 1. using a safety pin or paperclip heat up the tip. 2. grasp tick with tweezers firmly but enough to squash 3. touch tick with heated end of paper clip or safety pin...thi...

Re: Suddenly scared dog

One other thing to consider. What is the temperature in your area? I know where I live we have had days were the outside temps have reached the mid 90's to triple digits. That means the temp of the ground is extremely hot...hot enough to burn dog pads and injure feet. Before going out, fell the grou...
