Re: Helping with a reactive dog

 how I detest those! In your particular proposed scenario, I was thinking more of the likelihood of redirected aggression when Jasper couldn't get to greet his human friend "because of" the presence of another dog which is big, male and insecure. And other dog might think it's the las...

Re: Helping with a reactive dog

You know Jas better than anyone else. I have possibly spent too long working with highly reactive dogs, so I always go with "What's the worst thing that could happen?". And yes Actually I think she said the owners were going to take him to Pets@Home for a muzzle fitting... because, obvious...

Re: Helping with a reactive dog

While it could eventually possibly with good luck and a following wind be made to work a bit sometimes  IMO too many of the beings involved are going to be too stressed about it. Sometimes dogs can be schooled to feel confident with one person even if the main minders are doing everything they...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I hope your knee improves quickly, JudyN, and Lotsa, I'm keeping everything crossed for a good result for you and Merlin. My dogs have been interesting when I have been injured - some were comforters, some were so spooked by the fact that I was weak and therefore (presumably) could not protect them ...

Re: Dogs and babies

I knew it was tongue in cheek 8) but nevertheless hoped others in a similar position would stop and think..... Depends on child depends on parenting styles, depends on dog, and of course the best-trained child will have friends to visit who haven't been so well brought up, and whose parents might ha...

Re: Dogs and babies

The following is nothing to do with DS2 and fiance because I'm sure JudyN you would have brought him up better AND he knows Jasper... I'd go with option 1 but option 2 is probably more realistic if one/both partners actually want a baby or are careless with their contraception. What usually happens ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Great to hear what you've been up to, Erica, and it all sounds fascinating. What is tending style herding? Do your lecturers explore the aspect of herding dogs working within the hunting sequence as in they herd the prey towards the shepherd so s/he can ambush/kill them? if you want to discuss hunti...

Re: When getting a second dog goes right...

Dogs' number one priority is to feel safe. If I could see what was going on prior to the other dog arriving and then after, I might think differently because most people are rubbish at reading their dogs (spouses, children, bosses etc  ) But going on what we've been told, it appears that the S...

Re: Dog Park "Right of Way"

We don't have much in the way of dog parks, but we do have similar smallish areas where many people, some infirm, some accompanied by young children, come to exercise their dogs, gossip, drink coffee etc. No way would I be bringing a dog that needed behavioural training to such places, because the e...

Re: Caution About Essential Oil Diffusers

Aside from the issues already mentioned, given that a dog's sense of smell is so very superior to ours, it's highly likely that such scents in their immediate environment would distress them psychologically as well as physically. As you say, Suzette, Aromatherapy used for health reasons on animals i...

Re: Caution About Essential Oil Diffusers

That's a good call, Fundog.

I am qualified as an Aromatherapist and you don't mess with essential oils. They are powerful medicines.

Though I suspect the ones used in diffusers are synthetics. Which are quite possibly very toxic - for us too.

Re: Teeth

I'd be happy with that side. He may have just scraped a gum on something.

Normally - and I do appreciate this is Jasper  raw-fed dogs only get a small amount of soft tartar on the upper canines, and many don't even get that.
