I got the kind of trash can that you have to step on a lever to open the top and my dog at most only sniffs at it now. Of course, it's always possible that a different dog would be able to work out how to lift the top anyway, but luckily my dog hasn't tried. An alarm might help, but wouldn't you hat...

I assume you are looking for a way to calm your dog, so another option woult be Rescue Remedy or T Touch. It's just always good to have options.
