Re: my dog has to leave

Hi Belu, I am so sorry to hear about the problem with your collie. That is such strange behavior for a collie. I have been working with collies for 15 years now, and I am so sad to hear of yours acting out in that way. I have had 2 rescue biter collies over the years. One was intimidated by people, ...

Re: Training techniques not repeated on show

Thanks for answering. That's what I suspected, and I'm glad to hear that confirmed. Not that I necessarily saw anything WRONG with using those now obsolete techniques, but they didn't quite seem to mesh with what Victoria is showing us now. Personally, I will stop considering using the scare mat to ...

Training techniques not repeated on show

Hi all, I have noted that some techniques or tools that Victoria used on some shows have not been repeated on later shows; for example spraying compressed air near the dog as a distraction and the screechy alarm mats. I've been wondering if this is because she is trying to showcase as many different...

Re: Shock Collar

Amazing thread. I don't like shock collars, and once got in a very ugly argument with a demonstrator in a pet store trying to convince me it was the way to go. Very few people have been able to make me as angry as this man did. I'm sure it is effective; I've touched an electric wire on livestock fen...

Re: What happened to Peanut Butter, the dog?

It must be so frustrating to know how to help a dog, have people who say they will do 'whatever it takes for ___', but then won't make the effort to do it. There are times that I am growling at the people on the screen during her shows, and I'm only a spectator. it must take tremendous self control ...

Re: January 30th US Episode--disappointed in her strategies

I, too, was intrigued with Victoria's means of dealing with Buddy, the JRT. The time out/isolation response is an old technique, and I tried it on my JRT some 20 years ago -- and had about as much success with it as they had with Buddy. Isolation brought peace for as long as she was in the bathroom ...

Re: Victoria - CHANGE YOUR CLOTHES ON THE US SHOWS!!

Mattie has a good point about the consistency in presentation. Even further, when working with shy creatures who are new to me I make certain never to change shampoo or soaps as well. We present as a total package, especially to creatures who rely on establishing identity with scents instead of a ha...

Re: I am confused, shouldn't your dog protect you?

I have had dogs that protected me incorrectly, and I think maybe that is what Victoria is trying to avoid. Those dogs decided what they perceived as a threat to me, and they were not always accurate in their judgment. I do not view squirrels, bicycles, the mailman, etc. as a danger, but they did. Th...

Finally identified the source of the problem!

Hi all, Things are improving for us, and I'm so excited I just have to share it with someone! I have 4 collies. My neighbor has pit bulls. There has been warfare between them for nearly 3 years. They used to get along, but there was an ugly incident that resulted in my dogs charging the fence scream...
