Hello from a old friend

Hello, all! A few of you may remember me, and I'm thinking most of you won't know me. I browsed around and saw a few names that were here 6-9 years ago when I was an active member. I'll get to it then. I'm shocked I was able to use my original handle actually. I go by Noobs, so called becaus...

Re: Genetic aggression mutated gene in bull breeds

Hi Judy - this was just posted on Victoria's facebook page - a very good summary of what a trainer thought went on: http://wagandtrain.blogspot.com/ It's just a shame the dog HAD to be a bull breed. As she says, any breed could have done that. This is not about the video - I can't bear to watch it ...

You may also have to take it smaller. Hold the target close to their nose and then C/T for looking at the target, or even just looking toward the target. Do that for a while until they start moving their nose toward the target. And then build up to touching the target and moving the target further a...

Re: meet Spencer

Congrats! He's lovely and I love the name. (I am a fan of male dogs who are named with people names!) He's very lucky that his family considered his needs when rehoming him, and that you've now taken over his care. How sad that they're devastated, but I consider that a good sign that he's been loved...

Re: "Food on my dog"!

They probably tried with a biscuit, then it escalated. The fact that the dog wasn't restrained in any way but still never turned away or left or resisted was a good sign that she may have been shown great rewards before and learned to enjoy it. Hopefully it wasn't due to any punishment training, but...

Re: Quick advice?

For what it's worth, I totally agree. It takes no time at all to undo any good training. (Like leaving kids with their grandparents, they always come back sugared up and hyper!)

Re: Sigh, that was difficult

Well done for holding your ground. I guess you know now that in order to do so, you must avoid meeting the puppy because how can you resist otherwise? I googled Patterdales once, and found this info page including photos: http://www.allsmalldogbreeds.com/patterdale-terrier.html Sometimes I won...

"Food on my dog"!

Check it out, http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2012/02/02/pkg-moos-food-on-dog.cnn from this blog http://foodonmydog.tumblr.com/ I questioned whether the dog was always comfortable - there's a video showing her licking her lips while he was applying lettuce to her head and her head is usually low...

Agreed on a big “no” on the Border Collie, especially for a first-time dog owner with limited time. But how about a Golden? Irish Setter?

Re: Bonding with Your Dog

I experienced a miracle with Murphy <3 once. He saw a squirrel while out on a walk, stopped short, then looked at me! I had a crazy party and showered treats right there on the sidewalk; any onlookers might have thought me insane. But I couldn't believe he actually looked at me after seeing a squirr...

Re: Ari and an impulse control exercise

Brilliant! Well done.

If you really want to get eye contact between treats, ask for a "watch me" or a "look" maybe?

But what great impulse control! You should be very proud not only of Ari but also yourself for putting in the work. :D

Hi there, runlikethewind. :D I have missed the folks here so I drop by on occasion to read up on you guys. Sometimes I reply, most times I don't. There are more than enough people who are knowledgeable and able to help. But once in a while I can't help but give my two cents' worth. :D I do hope OP c...
