Re: OT Spring.

I have never seen a live humming bird, but I did see some preserved ones in the Scottish Natural History Museum, and frankly, they were utterly spellbinding, and I mean ridiculously beautiful. Some of them were little bigger than a bumble bee, and yet had tiny little feathers and feet, all in perfec...

Re: OT Spring.

OK, I have another you're not going to believe this..., but its all true. Just 15 minutes ago, I was walking my pair around the usual circuit, and I noticed a dead bird on the road. Yes, a dunnock. Anyway, the dogs totally ignored it, but as I reached it, it tried to flutter a little. I wasn't sure ...

Re: Microchipping

But that's a malfunction of the system Emmabeth, not the chipping, and a malfunction which would not have been detected without the chipping either. The dogs movements were recorded and on the system, but the knowledge wasn't correctly shared. I watched a TV prog about Australian RSPCA officers who ...

Re: Microchipping

Thanks guys. Nettle, you outlined some of my biggest fears. I also think chips are only useful for returning stolen or missing dogs, but too often even if vets scan a dog they might not check the database to see if its registered stolen. A lady I know said she took her new rescue to the vets and as...

Re: Microchipping

I'm pro chipping. I confess, I hadn't considered the health implications for the those unlucky to have problems, but my dogs are chipped and I'm happy about it. God forbid, if they were ever stolen, there's at least a chance to see them again, and have the fact they have been stolen flagged up whene...

Re: Ari gets his wish granted

I once killed a red deer with the car when I lived up north near Fort William. I braked hard from 70ish and rapidly slowed to around 25-30 without skidding, switched lanes to avoid it, only to see it jump across and back in the way. Clump! then a bump as I went over something. Nothing I could do. I ...

Re: Ari gets his wish granted

Hmmm, I wouldn't assume he didn't actually catch a deer. It doesn't take a staghound or a deer hound to do it, those breeds can do it as a job of work with reliable ease. A friend has a 25kg collie who has caught and killed two red deer, (non-intentionally and much to her absolute horror I might add...

Trust the Bankers?

Pippin doesn't. He hides his money under the mattress.

(He's not daft, it's Odin's mattress).

Re: "Fairness"

My dogs theory on fairness is complicated and not like our concept of share and share alike. Fairness for dogs means all I can have without fighting over it. If there's only one treat, then the little mouth doesn't feel cheated if the big mouth gets it. If the little mouth gets the treat, and the bi...

Ding! Ding!

In the blue corner, weighing in at 10.4kg or 22.9lbs, all the way from Middle Earth, we have the Urban Legend, Border Terrorist, Fearless Pippin the Great! And in the red corner, weighing in at 51.2kg or 112.6lbs, hailing from the dark continent, the Brooding Boss, the mighty Ridge Riding Ridgeback,...

Re: Yarn from Dog (or cat) Fur

I think it's a great idea, but can I pass on a small word of warning? Be careful on the presentation! There was a story a few years ago about people who made jumpers from dog hair, which was absolutely fine, but the article was very badly written, and it came across that the unfortunate people had k...
