Re: Useful Links and Recommended Reading
Hi all, Looking for book suggestions on multi-dog households. I got "Feeling Outnumbered" by London&McConnell and that was very nice for practical advice on what to train (I can start with the one dog now) but I guess what I would like is a book to help me think through getting another...

Farm dogs running away
Asking for a friend. (Situation not ideal, I know, so please constructive ideas.) So there's now four farm dogs on a huge yard - one oldie male and then young mum (recently spayed) and her two male pups of like 6 months (one is likely to still go to a new home). Super friendly dogs that love people ...

Re: Trainers in Finland?
I'm from Finland. Not a trainer though. Check http://elainkouluttajat.net/kouluttajat.html All listed should be professional trainers using positive reinforcement. There is a lot of "balanced training" going on in Finland so watch out for people that use treats for some things but then for...

UK Dog Bite Prevention Conference
I've just noticed the UK Dog Bite Prevention Conference is like where I live this weekend - hosted by my workplace too.
I don't think I'm professional enough to pay the 150 pounds to attend and I'm busy on Saturday anyways, but it would have been interesting.
Anyone going?

Re: Running with a dog
I think he is likely just very excited about getting to run with you. My advice is to run further. He will understand your pace once you've run a bit. He already has loads of experience with your walk. I sometimes run with my pup though she doesn't really care for longer runs (ie. more than a ...

Re: what does this behaviour mean?
I second that it is uncertainty/stress. My dog does the same thing - lies down when other dogs are approaching/near and if the other dog approaches near enough she suddenly jumps up. It is really quite annoying in that many people think that she is "waiting for the other dog and won't move as s...

Re: Our clip on tv for those who missed it
Fantastic!
I watched both episodes on the iPlayer, being in the UK now...
And they had footage of my new workplace. Maybe I can take part in a study. As long as it doesn't involve singing on TV.

Re: New pup - and it's cold outside!
I got my pup in winter in Finland and it was a cold one. It should be short walks anyways so just do like 10 min or less, if se seems cold or is lifting his paws. A coat could also be good. Don't go far from home and keep active. I got some booties for my pup, but I would have had to put them on ver...

Re: Thoughts on Off-Leash Walking
Answer to original question: Off leash to me means the dog can be "wherever" - as in within a certain distance ahead or behind or to the side. Of course it all depends on the place, but we often walk next to fields or on forest trails - on fields I prefer her not to go in the woods to the ...

Re: Barking Puppy
I had huge success with time-outs. As in my dog has never barked at me (or generally much at all) since she was a puppy I was reading a book - puppy started barking for attention - I went into the bathroom for like 5 seconds. Then I think I would return and repeat if the barking started right away, ...

Re: The send away exercise
This sounds like a competitive obedience "trick". I don't do competitive obedience, but I think the trick is in teaching the dog to notice the markers for the place first using treats or a toy. So you get them to go there. Then you add in the down. I think the pushing in agility would be d...

Re: Hi Viz and Flashing Lights
Ansa is also scared of weird lights and also headlamps on people (other than me...). So I treat for headlamps and turn mine off if we run into dogs also because otherwise I may shine it in Ansa's eyes. Ansa's light has a very slow blink, but maybe I'll turn it over to the unblinking mode. It's on th...

Re: Bath weekly too much for Maltese puppy?
I'm in the camp of actually fully shampooing my dog like once a year. :D Or when she rolls in something super smelly and the smell won't come out with just water... Or when I find my hands get dirty petting her black back. :D My dogs paws are also white (and fluffy) and I do have to shower off the s...

Re: Dog life in the UK...
I'm sure I'll spend a lot of time with a  face to begin with - on more than just people's accents. :D Culture shock will hit even though I have spent a lot of time in Ireland and imagine I know what it is generally like. It is always different actually doing the everyday life in a place. Hare...

Re: Bearded Collie
I admit I "secretly" also want a bearded collie. I dug up this article on them I had just read a while back. It says they are energetic, adaptable and smart and thus of course need loads of activity and training. They can be soft as in take fright (sounds etc.) easily like collies tend to ...
