Jumping like a Wild Banshee
Ziva is a young GSD - 15-18 mos, based upon the fact she's still growing. Weighs 81 lbs (so far). Adopted from a GSD Rescue about 3 months ago. We're having difficulties on a couple of issues - I'll use separate threads so EYE don't get confused! She will NOT stop jumping. On people, at doors...

Re: How to toilet train your puppy or adult dog.
In July, we adopted our girl from the German Shepherd Rescue. They said she was 2 yrs, but now we know they were wrong. She's still growing! We made the mistake of enrolling her in a Board & Train facility in an attempt to "jump-start" her basic obedience. She came with her old issues ...

Re: German Shepherds!
OK, well, I give up on trainers in our area...After 2 negative experiences, I contacted a VS-trained person (there are only 2 in Calif - 1 in NoCal & 1 in SoCal). I'm far north & so contacted that one. First, it took well over 2 weeks to get a response. Then, it was to tell me she's "to...

Re: American cocker spaniels
This will probably not be popular, but it's just honest observations. I worked for a neurovet for years as an AHT/Surgical Tech. There were 2 breeds we always "red-dotted", meaning we'd put a red dot on their charts so the next person that had to handle these were aware they were biters. M...

Re: German Shepherds!
Thanks, Noobs. The first facility was bad enough (I'm guessing she spent about 20-22 hours a day in a kennel). But the 2nd one - just 1 look at that prong collar set me off! EsPECially because she said she didn't use even choke collars.
That's why I'm not done with these people yet!

Re: German Shepherds!
I've never had a GSD - 2 Irish Setters, a Dobie, & a Rottie, but never a Shepherd. We recently adopted a 18-mo-old female GSD from a Shepherd Rescue. She's a tall dog, but at 71 lbs, was seriously underweight. My vet did a thorough check-up & she was very healthy, just skinny. We've had her ...

Espirit, You & I watched the same show this am! (Altho I prefered the earlier one regarding Shepherds, because we've recently adopted a Rescue Shepherd. ) Victoria has used these flat toys that have compartments to hold treats. I think they're sold at Petsmart. She said it gives a dog ...

Re: What do you think about doggie doors?
We have an enclosed outdoor cat run & a kitty door so our indoor cats can access it at their pleasure. We have a large GSD from a local rescue. A door big enough for her would also let in strangers, which has been a problem locally. So we won't use one. Plus, I wouldn't want the cats to get outs...

Re: New rescue chases my cats and eats garbage..
Variable, I'll start with the easier first: I JUST watched - this am - an old episode of It's Me or the Dog & Victoria put 2-10lb weights on the bottom of the trash can. Once the dog found he couldn't move it, he got bored & left it alone. The cat problem is serious & you're doing wonder...

Re: Hello from NorCal!
Thanks to you both for the 'Welcome'! I hope to add to my learning curve here, together with previous training experiences PLUS being a long-time fan of Victoria's program! Once our GSD has passed Basic, Intermediate, & Agility, we had looked into Schutzhund training. But I don't like their meth...

Like we need something added to poo to make it taste yucky...I used to gag when Brandy ate them. I threatened to take him to a shrink!

Re: Puppy figured out that cat poo is DELISH!
Zelda,
I called my vet - it's called 'Forbid'. No acid in it. As goofy as Irish Setters are reputed to be, it sure worked with ours.
We just rescued a GSD from a Shepherd Rescue - so far, so good with her...but I'm watching!

Re: Puppy figured out that cat poo is DELISH!
Another suggestion - talk with your vet. We had that problem years ago when my Irish Setter went for cat turds like See's candy. We were given small packets of something to add to his food for a couple of days, but I can't remember the name of it. Anyway, he left the cat boxes alone within a week. W...
