Re: Men!

My OH will use the wrong word commands even though I tell him not to  Just this evening Mr. Fundog and I were having a discussion about dog training. I tried to tell him how I've learned that dogs don't generalize well: "sit" in the kitchen doesn't necessarily mean the same thing in...

Re: German Shepherds!

Thank you all for you compliments on my boy. I don't like brag about much in my life, but he is my pride and joy. Also, I've really enjoyed the other pics on this thread because, well, I'll just admit here and now I'm a GSD nut. I love 'em. :D Assuming his name is smitty? He's gorgeous and their los...

Re: Interesting link -AVSAB Position on Dominance Theory..

Excellent article. I was just discussing this with a fellow pet care giver the other day. I think Victoria said it best while she was helping clients who had tried the dominance/pack training with poor results (paraphrasing) 'We're humans not dogs'. IMVHO while there maybe some kernels of wisdom and...

Re: Men!

We're having a problem at the moment. If my husband wants to go somewhere in the house and Rupert is in his way he'll tell him to move and Rupert does. The problem is that he moves into the space my husband is going to walk into so is again in the way and this can go on all the way across the room....

Re: Marking in the house....what to do

Yeah, I understand...I'm a two cup of coffee person before I can function type myself...... :D Sorry, may not be ammonia, was half asleep still while posting that. I have always been told not to use bleach to clean up accidents in the house as it can encourage them to pee there again though. Damned ...

Re: German Shepherds!

Great thread. Gotta love those GSDs!

Here's a pic of my baby, he's a rescue, those ears are down and because of that no one wanted him.

Their loss, my gain!!

He loves the lake, swimming and boating with his 'people'. :D

Re: Marking in the house....what to do

Hi Sarah....that kind of surprises me, I did not know there was ammonia in bleach? I work for some show kennels and they use bleach mixtures to clean and disinfect the runs....hmmm. To be clear though, I've only been using the bleach on the old towels, I lay them down on the area he likes to mark wi...

Re: Marking in the house....what to do

Thanks for sharing your story Melissa :) ...I'll continue to use the enzymatic cleaner and am using a steam cleaner on the spots as well. I think I'll try the 'nature's miracle' brand of cleaner next as I'm out of my current brand. He's a very clean natured fellow. Has only pooped in the house once ...

Re: Marking in the house....what to do

Yes, mostly when dogs are actually house trained, but scent marks, it's an insecurity issue. Keep on rewarding him when he goes outside, clean with enzymatic cleaners (like you do), and work on his confidence. Clicker training is a great way to work on confidence. The fact that he does not go in fr...

*whoops- on edit* I see the issue of stray dogs being able to enter the yard has been addressed.

Marking in the house....what to do

Hello all, I've been reading the forums for awhile and have found some really helpful tips here. So I'm hoping someone can help with my boy who just can't seem to help himself and marks in certain areas of the house. He is a German Shepherd, 5 year old neutered male who was a rescue. I think part of...
