Pyrs and food
hi Mary .. I'm responding to this post awefully late so not sure if you'll still see it or not. I got my first Great Pyrenees a year ago. I'm lucky to belong to a Pyr club and be around people who know that breed well. It's a great ride owning a Pyr! Re food - Pyrs have a low matabolism (sp?) and ea...

My Pyrenees does the same thing. Birds, dogs, loud cars etc. I've been trying to introduce these things to him by naming them then treating him when he's quiet. I try to pick a time during the day when I know there will be a lot of noises or people/animals near the house. So, for example, during rus...

You say she is interested in the treats but only as long as it takes for her to eat them. What about using something like a Kong stuffed with peanut butter and frozen or one of those puzzle cubes stuffed with treats. Both would keep her interested and challenged for a longer period of time. Baby ste...

After I saw your post I had to consider trying the peanut butter treats I give my dog. And ... suprise ... they are quite good. lol .. never thought I'd have done that. Anyway, they are STAM peanut butter and blueberry and if you can't find them at your local pet supply store you can find them onlin...

If your dog is treat motivated try this. While you're in the car and you see another car coming calmly toss a treat to him. It works best if you toss it near him so he has to look down for it as the car passes. You may want to start this on a street that isn't so busy. Keep it up and eventually your...

I'm curious how you know if a behaviour is guarding vs predation vs the joy of chasing? I have recently adopted a Great Pyrenees, known for their guarding instincts. He has been quite reactive to other animals (squirrels, birds, cats) while in our yard so it made perfect sense that he was just guard...

I have a large Pyrenees that does the same thing. I don't yet know if he has a physical problem or is just stubborn. I've taught him to use a ramp which works really well however it's heavy and awkward and has been hard on my back. Have you ever heard of the Otto Step? It's a plastic platform that i...

How do you all deal with walking a dog you are trying to work with on dog agression issues when there are loose dog running around? Unfortunately in my neighborhood too many people let their dogs loose even though it is against the law. It's hard to work on training in this situation to Herdingdogs...

Irresponsible owners walking offleash
DITTO! I too would like to see Victoria address this issue. I have been so frustrated walking my dog in my neighborhood and at the park. I deliberately do not walk in the park off-leash area and yet people let their dogs approach. Sometimes the owners aren't even in the near vicinity. It's suprising...

I supplement with raw foods
I recently adopted a 100lb Great Pyrenees who has some sort of allergy. In trying to determine the allergy type I elimated all grains, meat and poultry. While I'm still not sure if his allergies are food related I've been doing a lot of research and find that a raw food diet, irrespective of the pro...
