I work the other side and can tell you what generally happens to unbought petstore puppies here in the states. The petstore owner is not going to take a loss on the merchandise. The dogs are returned to the mill. What happens to them there depends on the miller. Some are sold to the public at large ...

My method for LLW: This is not by any means the only method I have for llw. In fact, it has very little to do with the lead at all. It is all about teaching a dog that the most reinforcing place to be is at your left side. Again, this is not a heel, just loose lead. But once learned, it can easily b...

Mattie, I do the same on the other forum. Ash posts on behavior, Merlin on rescue, Kaluha on abuse and mills and Angel, Demon and Pricess on whatever else I come across. As to Cesar having his place, the things he says I agree with are not unique to him. Any good trainer will tell you the same. Dogs...

My poms do not usually wear clothing, except for the occasional photo op or a snazzy bandana, but the pug has an assortment of sweaters and jog suits to keep her warm in the cold weather. I also tend to put sweaters or coats on any chi fosters I get this time of year.

I do rescue work and rescue workers tend to get lumped in with AR groups like PETA a lot.

I am not a fan. They have an agenda that includes the abolishment of pet dogs and cats completely.

They are radical and extreme and very capable of putting on a beguiling face to fool the general public.

Mattie is right, there are no small victories, only small steps in a journey. Every advance, not matter how small, should be celebrated to the fullest.

Nettle, I don't know about there, but here, people seem to think R+ based trainers are one trick ponies. But we really do have a lot of different techniques available to us, don't we? It's not just feed and feed and feed. I have a little pommy girl who would move the world to get you to throw the ba...

I've used those little bug clickers for dogs who are frightened of the clicker and they work well. Other possibilities would include ball point pens (as mentioned), baby food lids or one of those digital clickers. I get a lot of mill dogs and they are frightened of the click but the ping from the di...

I don't know that I would say that different breeds need different training as much as I would say that different breeds are motivated by different things. With any dog, I would try to find what that dog finds highly reinforcing and use that. I would still strive to get the behavior than mark and re...

Doesn't work on husbands. They are abberant creatures, incapable of learning and the one species for which I advocate dominance theory and shock collars.

MAttie, I don't dispute that children learn by OC, CC or, as i your example, extinction, but my point was that dogs do not have the ability to learn by example or have you explain what you want and they can do it or many of the other ways children learn. While dog training can work on children, not ...

Of course with an all positive method all you can teach is one side, because there is never a consequence for the wrong behavior. This is just a huge peeve of mine. A positive only method would be R+/P+. Both of these quads are adding a consequence. I don't know anyone who would use only these two ...

Rally Obedience. You don't need a lot of room for it and it is fun.

Mattie, two left feet. I couldn't dance if I tried. But I can heel to music :D
