German Shepherds are not well known for their tendencies to greet strangers. It's been my experience that they naturally tend to be a little aloof. That being said they are not a breed that enjoys strangers trying to smother them like a lab or golden who typically thrive on human contact and ask fo...

I'm glad I'm not the only person to experience this. My Anatolian, true to her nature, patrols the yard, but there's not much to guard against here in suburbia. Except squirrels. How she hates those squirrels. My neighbor decided to replace some of our common fence, so part of my yard was partitione...

Victoria has moved to the US (Atlanta Georgia) and films IMOTD in America now. I have not heard of her filming in the UK anymore. If I am wrong I will be corrected. That Victoria has moved to the USA is pretty shocking news, but I guess that explains why the first season of US IMOTD cases all seeme...

Re: US and UK versions

I've only just caught up with a few of the US episodes and I can't believe how polite Victoria is to the families. Over here she didn't mince words - told it to the families straight. Obviously a cultural difference. I wonder how hard she finds it to bite her tongue sometimes. Just an observation. ...

Ah, German shepherds, my favorite breed. The big problem with a possibly abused GSD is that their instinct and their negative experience is working in conflict. It makes them tense to shut them away from the household guest activity yet they are tense around the visitors. As already written, it's be...

I don't give a vitamin supplement because I try to make (and hope!!!) my dogs' diet is nutritionally complete. I do add glucosamine/condroitin supplements starting around age 4 or 5 because sport dog's joints take such a pounding. Sort of the "once of prevention" theory :)

Re: Very spoiled dog

It didn't look like an opinion but more like you were telling her that feeding from the table was wrong and she shouldn't be doing it. Boundaries do have to be in place but what the boundaries are depends on what the owners want their dogs to do. My dogs are fed before me and sleep on my bed but th...

Re: Better Than Canned!

Pretty kewel :D It reminds me of the recipe my GSD's breeder gave me back in the early 70's when there was no decent dog food available in stores: 5 pounds meat, including "variety" (liver, kidney) boiled with kelp until done Add cracked biscuit kibble, cottage cheese, vitamin and coat con...

Actually, Annie is not a beagle-- she's a springer spaniel/ lab mix. And the "Find it!" game is one of her favorites. :D She would have been an awesome narcotics officer! Oops, sorry. I thought you said beagle. If you want to go farther with Annie, you can up the ante a bit by laying a tr...

Re: Very spoiled dog

Sorry, I don't know how feeding a dog from the table is doing what she is supposed to do. We don't eat out of our dog's plate (bowl); why is it necessary that they eat from ours? How would guests feel about a dog hanging around the table expecting to be fed? Isn't it better to have a breakfast, lun...

Re: How do help my dog cope with the loss of our older dog

Hi We lost our old girl 2 weeks ago and our young ***** (2 and a half) has just started to behave strangely and is obviously missing her mate. We gave her some rescue remedy originally and changed her routine but now she has become very clingy, follows us around all the time and only settles at nig...

LOL, hey thanks for your reply-- better late than never, lol. As it turned out, my Annie is a natural. One night a couple of months ago, I lost my other dog, Dottie (I had lost hold of her long lead, and she got herself ensared around some brush). It was pitch dark out, and in rough terrain. I told...

Re: Very spoiled dog

I love all the shows and there is something to be learned from each. Although I feed my dog from the table and she sleeps in my bed, it doesn't seem to be causing any problems. Without any training, she does what she is suppose to do. Good breeding I guess. Sorry, I don't know how feeding a dog fro...

Also-- anyone else who visits here who is already involved in tracking: Do you have any great advice/insight/encouragement for us? Can an adult dog learn to track, or do you have to start when it is still a puppy? Sorry I didn't see your post sooner. Yes, an adult dog can learn tracking. My first G...

One thing about basket muzzles --- try to find the "old style" open metal type rather than the more common (and more closed) leather type. They are a lot less scary for the dog, if they drool from anxiety and aggression it's not trapped in the muzzle, and breathing is easy.
