Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
The quality of recent posts has degraded sharply. Have a nice life. Edit: My dogs are fine and living a good life.

Re: friend for bax
Hi. Maybe it's time to get some face-to-face help in your home, from a reward-based dog trainer and/or behaviourist. With your help, they can assess the whole situation with an independent set of eyes, and hopefully make an effective new plan to follow. Cheers and best wishes.

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Hi. It's a lazy day today after an evening and night of thunder storms and barking. Max the GH seems (slightly) less troubled by thunder now, but when it shakes the house at 12 midnight, 12.05am, 12.10am, 12.15am, 12.20am, 1.00am, 1.30am etc. it kept Kelly dog awake and sitting up, and meant my slee...

Re: Breed suggestions?
Hi. Depending if you're looking primarily for a dog for the job, or primarily for a pet dog, my suggestions would be
1. Spaniel (whichever variety)
2. Beagle
3. a mixed breed with the most suitable behavioural 'fingerprint'
Maybe google Steve Austin dog trainer for some ideas.
Cheers.

Re: Counter conditioning
Hi Kimlie. As has been said, there is more than one correct answer, depending on your goals for the training. I'd guess continue what you are currently doing (IE: Operant Conditioning), keep treating for 'good' behaviour, and eventually reduce the frequency of treats. Treats-only can be as effective...

My Max the GH does something similar occasionally but only for a moment.
The videos look like a displacement behaviour, but I'd like to learn more.

Yesterday, Kelly dog and Max the greyhound and I were walking, and did not cause a slow painful inhumane death to any animal.

Re: 8 m/o reactive Beagle mix - long post, advice and encouragement welcome!
Hi. My/our vet is also understanding, and makes allowances for Kelly's fear inside the vet clinic. If I saw the same level of fear in another dog, I'd expect a bite. Outside the clinic she calms right down (at least under threashold) again and sniffs and wanders about, and sleeps well on the drive h...
