Re: Marking = confidence or anxiety?

I would say Lucas is a confident dog, at least according the criteria I know to use to evaluate it. He's a major marker, but then he lived on a ranch where he kept the coyotes off the property before I got him and my guess he did it mostly by marking, and every once in a while a good chase. So I thi...

Re: Games without treats

Hmmm.....I don't know. I hear different schools of thought on that. I usually don't allow that kind of play because it's so easy for the dog to get over aroused in play. Lucas is the exception, and very rarely do I do it, only as a high value reward for something REALLY hard for him because he LOVES...

Re: Games without treats

I have a feeling you're better at phasing out the treat than you think. I doubt that every time you ask Jasper for a cue you have a treat on you, do you? When Jasper brings back the toy if he just sits there expecting a treat you could take the toy, throw it all around, run around the room with it, ...

Re: Games without treats

Have you tried phasing out the treat with games just like you would with any cue?

If you've never done "find it" you could start that game, having him find a toy, and the reward could be a game of tug of fetch as the reward instead of a treat.

Re: Alpha roll your rat...

Most ridiculous thing ever. Apparently there's great concern out there for some about what the "little thug" might do if not properly alpha rolled five times a day. Now, does anyone give advise on this rat board on how to clicker train rats? Because that would be cool, I'd like to see that...

Re: irish terrier drops to pavement when walking

Just to clarify what I'm pretty sure OnceInAWeil is talking about OnceInAWeil is not talking about luring your dog from the position he's put himself in, because I have a feeling that by that time he may not take a treat or allow himself to be lured. It's two things: Keeping enough distance that you...

Re: Dominance help

I just wanted to agree with everything OnceInAWeil said. Please try and get the idea of Jasper being "dominant" out of your head, because looking at Jasper in this way will not benefit you in seeing what this really about, which is fear. Being dominant gives most people a negative feeling ...
