Whining at night?
Okay, so Rose, our puppy mill Yorkie girl, has started a new bad habit. We're making some progress with other pieces, but last night was kind of awful. Our older dog Maisie has an easy chair in the bedroom that she likes to sleep in, and I guess that last night, Rose wanted Maisie to sleep down on t...

Re: HELP! Rescue dog frustrating the heck out of us
Wow, Emmabeth, you are a genius! It seems so obvious in retrospect, but after just an hour of treat-based training, Rose has started to respond to her name! The long line worked well, too, although she did need to have Maisie outside with her for company. Will keep you updated, but I sure wish those...

Re: HELP! Rescue dog frustrating the heck out of us
Thanks Emmabeth! You're a lifesaver. What do we do with Maisie if Rose is getting lots of small meals in a day? We don't want to be unfair to our beloved older girl. Also, do we give Maisie extra treats while we're training Rose, or separate them for training purposes? I love the long line idea. She...

HELP! Rescue dog frustrating the heck out of us
More tales of woe re. the new puppy mill rescue girl, Rose. Basic info: Rose is about 5, a Yorkie mix rescued from a MO puppy mill. We've had her for about a week now. She has a very regular schedule for eating and going outside-- our other dog is 16, so she does need frequent potty breaks, and Rose...

Re: Yorkie housetraining problem
Beansheller, I am having a similar problem! Our Yorkie mix is 5 and a puppy mill rescue. She's very nervous, and someone taught her to use pee pads, so we're starting to get extremely frustrated. She was so neglected that she doesn't respond to voices at all, really, so we praise her like mad when s...

Re: Helping a timid dog adjust?
Thanks Minkee!
Anything I can do about how nervous Rose is about being carried outside? She's also too nervous to go out on her own, so we're not quite sure which is less stressful-- for her and us.

Re: Helping a timid dog adjust?
Chay, do you have a link to the article on loose-leash walking? I tried a search but didn't come up with what I was looking for.

Re: Helping a timid dog adjust?
Thanks Erica! That's a great, helpful article. I knew there'd be something like that in the forum, but I couldn't figure out quite how to search-- there's so much info in here!

Re: Helping a timid dog adjust?
Thanks to you all! Chay, I've thought about clicker training before but just never done it. I will check out the site-- thanks! And I didn't find your post rambling. It's good to get confirmation, and you're so right about that desire to "prove" that we're the good guys. Rose seems to be s...

Helping a timid dog adjust?
Hi all. We've just adopted a second dog, a Yorkie mix from a closed-down Missouri shelter. She and our older dog get along quite well, but little Rose is very timid, and has clearly never walked on a leash before, had a bed of her own, etc. What can we do to help her adjust to her new life? We're tr...
