Multiple walking issues

Our 1-year old chocolate lab, Harley, seems to be having multiple issues when taking walks. We got him 6 months ago. At first, we were taking him and our redbone coonhound for walks twice a day - midmorning and after (our) dinner. The coonhound will whine when he sees other dogs (Elvis was right - t...

Re: New Shelter Dog. I may be in over my head.

We found a line of products at Walmart called "Out!" to decrease "going" in the house and chewing. We researched them and found quite a number of good reviews, but didn't have much success with them ourselves, so only time was the solution to our problems. Maybe you would have be...

Re: Tips for training a dog who isn't motivated by food or toys?

I would cut down his 'in a bowl' portions quite drastically I agree. Back when I was getting my Psychology undergraduate degree, I was fortunate enough to attend a class at a different college which involved animal testing. Okay, so they were rats and pigeons, not dogs, but still we had to abide by...

Re: New dog in town!

Hi, Kris! Our 18-month Redbone Coonhound mix, Red, and our new 6-month Chocolate Lab, Harley, are rough players, too. When we first got Harley, it was constant :? but after about three days it calmed down a bit. Occasionally, they will still chase each other around the house and wrestle, but no one ...

Re: One picky eater, one bottomless pit.

The vet says he's fine and dandy. He started getting picky about a week after we got him from the pound over a year ago. At that time he was a totally different dog. At the time, he was being housebroken and learning new tricks, so he was getting frequent treats. He was scared to death of everything...

One picky eater, one bottomless pit.

Our 18-month old redbone coonhound, Red, has been a picky eater for quite a while now. We have tried dry kibble (grocery store types and high-protein specialty store types), canned food, kibble that makes gravy, raw...you name it. The first time we give him something new, he will gobble it right dow...

Hello, me again.

Hi! I'm posting here a second time because we want to introduce a new addition to our family. We had been considering a second dog for a long time and were looking at the pound for just the right one. Just hours after Victoria's email cautioning people about getting a new puppy for Christmas arrived...

Who am I?

Hello. My name is Red, and I love you. The pound where I found my Mommy and Daddy said I was a Redbone Coonhound mix, but what am I mixed with? My mommy thinks it must be a herding breed because I always need to make sure my people are where they are supposed to be. If they are out of place, I will ...

Re: What has your smart dog figured out?

We once had an Old English Sheepdog named Heidi. She could open doors and could let herself out when she needed to go. She taught our two other dogs, mutt Mickey and terrier Max, how to climb a 4-foot high fence (occasionally giving Max a platform to step on with her nose). When you were sick, she w...

Re: Should I get the vet to trim his nails?

With our dog, Red, I've found pros and cons for either taking him to the vet for a nail trimming or doing it ourselves. He gets anxious at the vet, whereas at home one of us can hold a treat in front of him and scratch his ears while the other trims, so doing it at home is less stressful for him. My...

Re: Neither of my dogs will eat.

I wish I had an answer for you, but I am having the same problem. Our Redbone Coonhound does the same thing - looks at the food, looks at me, sniffs the food, and walks away. Then, as soon as I turn my back, he dumps the food on the floor and walks away again. It started when he got tired of the Pup...

Re: What has your smart dog figured out?

Our Red has figured out that he can move the furnature in the living room. He fancies himself an interior designer. He likes to move the papasan chair over by the door so he can look out and greet everyone who passes (because of course, he loves everyone, and everyone was put on this earth to give l...
