Re: Pet Loss

First, I'm so sorry to hear of Herman's passing. And I'm sorry it's still so difficult for you to cope with your loss. Thank you for the kind words. I'm past the darkest point in my grieving now and I'm coping much better. My involvement in local animal rescue has helped me a lot, an emotional outl...

Re: Cat Reactive

With difficulty... Is this a cat in the home, or cats seen out on walks? What breed is the dog in question, how old, and how established is the behaviour? Does the dog seem to just want to chase/hunt the cat, or does he react aggressively? Does the dog redirect onto the person holding him? How easi...

Good approach.

Re: Cat Reactive

Thanks, that's good stuff. Herman scared me around cats. I stopped bringing him into a pet supply store where he was a staff favorite when he went red zone on some cats there. That was hard for me because of his gentleness with humans. The store manager once remarked that she had never seen a dog ac...

I can see the danger now. I saved the site with the photographs so I can go back and look at details. Thanks for helping me learn.

Re: Cat Reactive

Herman was an American Pit Bull Terrier, he was clearly aggressive toward cats but NEVER redirected toward a human. Herman was NOT the least bit human aggressive. Treats had little to no effect. Herman stayed briefly at a home with a cat but he was so aggressive toward the cat that he could not be i...

Re: Favorite Dog Names

Herman had been "Hammer" before he adopted us. I liked "The Munsters" television show and I thought Herman Munster was a sweet guy but was misunderstood because of his "scary" appearance. "Herman" seemed like a perfect fit.

I don't see the issues, I'd be grateful for any explanations to help me learn. :?

Re: Ignorance

I agree. Choking a dog isn't training, it's force. I now cringe when I see choke chains and prong collars :|

Re: Molly. Run Free, Baby-girl.

I don't remember what happened with the bugs. We prepared for the potential bug problem by having the bug screen setup behind the deck.

Molly. Run Free, Baby-girl.

Molly was born on a farm and wasn't keen on coming into the house on her first night at her new home. We slept on the back deck the first night. http://i1367.photobucket.com/albums/r797/4mattspics/Scan_zpse2c644be.jpg http://i1367.photobucket.com/albums/r797/4mattspics/FirstNight_zpsfa5a22c9.jpg

Re: Ignorance

True. Years ago, when I was first beginning to train a White German Shepherd Dog puppy through a breed club and rescue, I was taught to use choke-chains and prong collars. I did so for years as I didn't know any better. I came to regret that approach and renounced it completely when I learned ...

Ignorance

While talking to someone who had known my angel, Herman, I mentioned that Herman was pulling on the leash. The person said to get a choke -chain. I said that wasn't going to happen, the person's reply was that Herman needed to be shown who's boss because "he's a pit bull". Herman loved thi...
